Q & A

1What is ESLA in Egypt?
It is a non-profit organisation created in accordance with the provisions of the Egyptian national law number 149 of the year 2019, and texts corrected and amended, an association named “Egyptian Society for Landscape Architects” abbreviated “ESLA” in English and in Arabic: الجمعية المصرية لمهندسي اللاندسكيب
2I have been in the field for 10 years but I have not heard of your work before?
That is very normal. We are group of dedicated landscape architects who are invested in advocating and recognising the discipline in Egypt. We are not necessarily the best but certainly ones of the most dedicated. In addition, your practice might overlap with the industry but not necessarily in compliance with the overall framing of the discipline.
3Why is this NGO lead by these people?
Why not? We took the initiative and walked a long journey to arrive at this point. It consumed our resources and we were happy to invest in such an endeavour.
4How to become a member in ESLA?
You will need to review the membership criteria here. Then apply by filling a form, uploading your CV and portfolio, and pay initial registration fees. After approval by the expert panel, you will be asked to meet with them where you get the final decision to join, or recommendation to complete some missing requirements.
5Is ESLA alternative to the Syndicate?
Not at all. ESLA and the Syndicate are two different bodies with different purposes. One can be a member in either of them or both. The membership criteria and the objectives are very different.
6Is ESLA membership makes me an IFLA member?
Yes. As the National Association recognised by the IFLA, your local membership in ESLA makes you part of the IFLA community.
7Can I volunteer to support ESLA?
Yes of course, and it is encouraged. ESLA aims to grow by its members and to advance the discipline with the collective actions of al its members. Please see our programmes here, and express your interest by writing to this email: [email protected]
8What are the benefits of being a member of ESLA?
To be part of larger landscape community, to gain access to opportunities of learning, to have the opportunity to publish at African Landscape Journal, to connect with fellow professionals in Egypt, to benefit from shared knowledge on most recent landscape topics, to be able to use the ESLA logo as one of your credentials, to be recognised as Egyptian landscape architect, and to get the recognition of the IFLA.
